OUTDOOR ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITY AND BUSHCRAFT

St Georges RC Primary School, Worcester

OVERVIEW

During the spring term Active Youth Outreach Services ran a 10 week Outdoor Adventurous Activity (OAA) and Bushcraft course on behalf of ‘Freedom Leisure’ for St Georges Roman Catholic Primary School in Worcester. The aim of course was to provide the group of children with extra curricular enrichment as part of their after school programme.

SESSION

Freedom Leisure had approached AYOS as a result of hearing about the work we do with children and young people and asked us to create and deliver a OAA and Bush craft course for a group of 10 children. Across each session the children were introduced to a range of different activities including Orienteering and Map Reading, Survival Skills, Fire Lighting, Cooking, Shelter Building., Pond Dipping and more….

Our experienced and qualified staff managed each session individually and safety was of utmost importance through-out, but still providing valuable experiences for the children to learn and reconnect with their natural surroundings. The course itself was designed to be flexible so that it could promote and encourage self led learning, this allowed the children to take ownership of each session and whilst supported by our staff they were able to construct their own objectives depending on what the want to achieve.

RESULTS

Throughout the course the children developed a wide range of personal skills and safety practises that allowed them to achieve and succeed within each element of the OAA and Bush craft provision. As a result of the flexible, self led nature of the course we received some fantastic feedback from both the school and children.

“My favourite things were fire lighting and cooking with shelter building second”

“I liked the free choice compared to normal lessons”

“The small group size meant we all got to have lots of turns at each thing”

CONCLUSION

As a result of the positive feedback we are now launching other extra curricular enrichment clubs for children and young people across the region to incorporate archery as well as general OAA (Outdoor Adventurous Activity) including bush craft, survival and orienteering sessions.
