OVERVIEW

On Wednesday the 21st of October 2015 Active Youth Outreach Services initiated their mentoring and intervention support programmes on behalf of Stourport High School, Safer Schools Partnership and West Mercia and Warwickshire Police in an attempt to promote positive relationships in young men towards women as part of a pilot CHARM (Coaching Healthy and Respectful Masculinity) project

BACKGROUND

The Stourport High School and the Safer Schools Partnership had identified the need to promote positive relationships in young men towards women as part of their mentoring and intervention service provided to selected students.

SOLUTION

The Safer Schools Partnership and Stourport High School (SHS) approached AYOS as a result of hearing about recent successful partnership projects as well as the good work we have done with children and young people as part of our outreach work in other communities across Worcestershire, SHS had heard about the youth trailer being used as a self contained mobile classroom and the highly skilled and qualified teaching staff able to deliver bespoke mentoring and intervention programmes to students of all ages, utilising practical and innovative methods of learning to enhance student development.

RESULTS

The project itself is still continuing on a bi-weekly schedule and is due to finish in February 2016. The results so far have been fantastically encouraging and the selected cohort of 8 young men have really engaged with the programme so far and genuinely enjoyed the experience of each session. In the relatively short amount of time AYOS has engaged with them in the project the young men have grown in maturity and are able to take part in serious discussions surrounding positive relationships towards women, they are continuously learning and challenging conventional theories that are portrayed in the societal image.

CONCLUSION

As a result of the early positive outcomes seen from the intervention and mentoring programme AYOS are hoping to develop this further and engage with other local schools as part of their student offering, encouraging positive relationships as well as supporting on other intervention projects.
